Design contest for a new masterplan

Design contest for a new masterplan

Isavia, the operator of Iceland’s main airport and transatlantic hub, Keflavik International, has invited six pre-qualified parties to participate in a closed design contest for a 2015-2040 Masterplan for the airport.

This design contest presents Isavia’s vision for the future evolution of Keflavik International, which aims to deliver an integrated development of the airport through a Land-Use Plan, Terminal Plan and an Environmental Plan which together forge the airport’s Masterplan. Keflavik International Airport is Iceland’s gateway serving most international traffic to the capital city of Reykjavik. The airport is one of the fastest growing airports in Europe with 16-20 percent annual growth since 2010. This rapid trend and future prospects call for robust planning for both near-term and long-term capacity expansion. The end-product of the design contest will be a proposal for a high quality, sustainable and economical Masterplan for the airport.

The call for Pre-qualification was published in the online version of the Supplement to the Official Journal of the European Union, TED (Tenders Electronic Daily). The pre-qualification process, completed on November 14th, produced the following six participants in the design contest:

INECO Ingenierta Y Economia del Transporte SA in Spain
Ramboll A/S in Denmark
Naco Netherlands Airport Consultants in the Netherlands
Nordic - Office of Arthitecture in Norway
EC Harris LLP in Great Britain
Mott MacDonald LTD in Great Britain

The selection of a consultant or a group of consultants to undertake the development of the Masterplan will be completed by February 2nd 2015. The selection will represent the best proposal for the development of the airport. An important factor in the design process will be the optimization of the airport’s functionality and performance without challenging environmental standards. Each Participant is to characterize an approach for the development of the Masterplan including a plan for consultation with stakeholders which is a fundamental element in the planning process.

A completion date for the 2015-2040 Keflavik International Airport Masterplan is 25th September 2015.

„I am delighted to see the interest in this important project and remain confident that the contest will produce stimulating results. The experience and credentials presented by all participants is remarkable and I am in no doubt that a new Masterplan will be most constructive for the planning and development of the airport“, said Bjorn Oli Hauksson Managing Director of Isavia.
