The conclusions of the Competition Authority referred to the Competition Appeals Committee

Isavia has decided to lodge a complaint against the preliminary decision of the Competition Authority from 17 July 2018 to the Competition Appeals Committee. The substance of the preliminary decision is that the Authority orders Isavia to temporarily discontinue the collection of fees for the use of coach parking spaces located further from Keflavík Airport. Isavia disagrees with the conclusions of the Competition Authority and considers it untoward that the Competition Authority halt the collection of fees for one of the services offered at Keflavík Airport. In the opinion of the company, the fact that some of the operators of coach services to and from the airport pay a fee for the facilities and some do not skews the competitive position of the parties in the market.

Keflavík Airport is financed by fees collected for facilities and services

The operation and development of Keflavík Airport is financed by means of user fees and fees for facilities in the airport. Isavia has arranged such fee collection in accordance with Icelandic laws, the international obligations of Iceland and the guidelines of international institutions. This arrangement is in accordance with the manner of the operation and development of our competitor’s airports in Europe and the US.

The collection of fees has been discontinued

In accordance with the preliminary decision, the collection of fees has been halted while the preliminary decision remains in effect. If, however, the decision is overturned during the appeals process or before a court of law, fees will be collected for the period in which the stoppage was in effect. If the final conclusion in the case is that the fee collection for the coach parking proves to have been unlawful, the company will refund the fees that were collected from the time that the fee collection began.
