Special recognition for hygiene during Covid

Keflavík Airport is among the group of 15 airports in Europe receiving special recognition from Airports Council International (ACI) for hygiene during the past year.

During the final quarter of 2020, the ACI added this new award category to its service survey. The survey assesses passenger experience of safety and hygiene in the airports in question and the measures taken after the COVID-19 pandemic began. Keflavík Airport was classified as being in top 25% of airports in Europe where passengers were of the opinion that the best hygiene and safety measures had been employed in the fight against COVID-19.

The ACI service survey, the Airport Service Quality programme (ASQ), is the world´s leading airport customer experience measurement and benchmarking programme. In its implementation, passengers at airports throughout the world are asked standardized questions about 34 service categories. The comparison, therefore, is coordinated and extensive, both between airports and years. The survey is conducted in 348 airports throughout the world, 115 of which are in Europe. Keflavík Airport is among 38 airports in its size category (5–15 million passengers).

“During these trying times we at Keflavík Airport have listened to our customers and, through effective collaboration with the health authorities and implemented the measures necessary to ensure a hygienic and safe environment for our customers,” says Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, Chief Commercial and Airport Development Officer (CCDO) at Isavia. “It is extremely gratifying to see that the passengers that have passed through the airport last year have been pleased with the measures that we have put in place. This clearly shows that the employees of Isavia and our business partners at Keflavík Airport have been successful in their endeavors under very difficult conditions last year.”

In addition to the recognition for hygiene, Keflavík Airport is, for the third year in a row, among the airports in Europe in its size category that provide the best services according to the ACI survey.

Guðmundur Daði says that Isavia and Keflavík Airport are thankful for the recognition. All employees have done their utmost to provide good services. They have listened to our passengers and are to be thanked for their efforts during these trying times.

“This recognition, moreover, is a good input into the construction work beginning at Keflavík Airport. By means of a share capital increase in the company, announced recently, we will continue to be able to continue to invest in providing our customers with an improved experience of the Airport,” says Guðmundur Daði. This will all be in accordance with the company’s long-term plans.”

Over the course of this year, preparations are being made to issue an invitation to tender for the extension of the North and South buildings of the Leifur Eiríksson Air Terminal. This will add over 10,000 square meters to the terminal and strengthen the Airport’s competitiveness even further. For more information see here.

ACI has announces its result and the formal delivery of the award is expected to take place at an international service conference held by the ACI in Kraków in Poland later this year. Further information on the ACI Service Awards.
